  • Radiography Courses – get a degree with a bright future

radiography tech coursesNowadays, one of the most promising careers in medicine and allied health services can be found in the field of radiography.  If you want to become a radiologic technologist you will have to enroll in radiography courses.  Courses in radiography are offered by many schools, universities and colleges.  You can also take online radiography courses.

While there are many educational institutions that offer radiography courses, it is not advisable to enroll in just any school or college.  You have to make sure that the school or college is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology.  The JRCERT reviews and accredits the radiography courses and programs of traditional and online educational institutions.

It’s important to enroll only in accredited schools offering radiography courses.  Only those who have completed their radiology program at accredited institutions may take the licensing or certification exam administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

    Radiography Defined

Radiography uses radiation such as x-rays to produce images of the tissues and organs in the body.  It is widely used in the medical profession to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions.

    Radiologic Technologists

Radiologic or radiographic technologists must take radiography courses and undergo training in the use of specialized equipment such as X-ray machines, ultrasound, CT scanners and MRI scanners.  Radiography courses cover such areas as radiation safety, anatomy, patient care, PET scan, mammography, film handling techniques, and many more.  It is the job of the radiologic technologist to take diagnostic scans or images and perform radiation therapy treatments.

    Radiography Courses

radiography courses classThere are various radiography courses being offered today. Many universities offer a two-year associate in science degree program in radiography.  This radiography course consists of classroom lectures and clinical training in anatomy, physiology, imaging techniques, radiation physics, equipment protocols, patient care, and others.

Many institutions also offer a bachelor’s degree for radiographers.  This program takes four years to complete.  Students who enroll in a 4-year program can choose from a number of courses including Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences or Bachelor in Medical Imaging Science.

After completing a 2-year or 4-year radiography course, radiographers can take a certification exam administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).  Many states require radiologic technologists to be ARRT certified before they can be issued state licenses.  Keep in mind that you must be a graduate of an ARRT-approved program to take the exam.

    Specialization in Radiography

Radiography can be classified into two categories: diagnostic and therapeutic.  Radiologic technologists can specialize in any of the following fields of radiography: sonography or ultrasound, bone density scanning, nuclear medicine, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), mammography, computed tomography, and cardiovascular-interventional radiography.  Radiography courses on the different specialties or modalities are offered by many educational institutions, including online schools.

    Radiography Training

Students in radiography courses learn how to use x-rays for diagnostic purposes.  Radiography training includes learning how to prepare and position a patient for x-ray.  Many radiography schools now also offer specialized courses in computerized tomography scanning or CT scanning, magnetic resonance imaging or MRI, and nuclear medicine.

radiography courses schoolRadiology schools offer a variety of programs.  An associate degree can be completed in two years while a bachelor’s degree requires four years to finish.  However, experienced radiography technologists who want to specialize in a different field such as MRI or CT can take a one-year certificate program.

Certified radiologic technologists can work in hospitals, clinics and laboratories.  If you want to work in an administrative position in radiology, a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree will be required.  For a teaching position, you must have a master’s degree from an accredited radiology technology school.

radiography courses at Florida• Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences offers a wide selection of radiology degrees and certificates.  The school offers campus-based, online and hybrid radiography courses with flexible options.  Beginners as well as existing radiography professionals can enroll in the school’s courses on radiography, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, or MRI.  Florida Hospital even offers an online bachelor’s degree program in radiography.  One of its most popular radiography courses is the Advanced Placement Track Sonography (Ultrasound) program.  Experienced x-ray technicians or radiographers can enroll in this short course to qualify for ultrasound positions.

    • Sanford-Brown Institute offers radiography courses leading to certificate, associate and bachelor’s degrees.  The school offers top quality education in the field of radiography.  Sanford-Brown Institute offers programs that can be completed in as little as nine months, allowing you to enter the job market sooner.  Students at Sanford-Brown Institute are given every opportunity to learn how to operate the most updated tools and equipment in radiography.  The school has many campuses located throughout the country, including Florida, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas.  In addition to general radiography, courses offered include Dental Assisting with Limited X-ray, MRI, Diagnostic Medical Sonography or Ultrasound, and Cardiovascular Technology.

    Online Radiography Courses

radiography courses onlineRadiography uses different imaging technologies to diagnose and treat a variety of diseases including tumors, heart ailments, and dental problems.  The imaging techniques make use of x-rays, ultrasound, MRI and CT scans.  Online radiography courses are available but you will need an externship to give you the hands-on experience required to become a qualified radiologic technologist.

Some of the online radiography courses offered by various schools are anatomy, physiology, patient care, dental imaging, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and mammography.

    Online Radiography Degrees

radiography coursesAssociate and Bachelor of Science degrees in different fields of radiography are offered by online schools.  After completing any of these courses, you can take a certification exam administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.  To further advance your career, you may want to enroll in a Master of Radiologic Science degree.  This is also available as an online program.  The coursework is taken online.  However, you must accomplish an externship program in a clinical setting.

There are many schools that offer online radiography courses, including University of Missouri, Broward College, and Riverland Community College.  These schools offer different radiography programs.  You can go online and get more information about these schools and the radiography courses they offer.
